We are pleased to invite you to participate in the forthcoming conference, “Chinese Muslim (Hui) in Diaspora: Culture, Gender, Identity, and Religious Traditions”. This conference, organized by the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and sponsored by Islamic Cultural Association (Hong Kong), is to be held on 3-4 December at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Hijrah (migration) and localization of Muslim communityare important aspects of the spread of Islam worldwide.Through studying the religious, cultural and social issues involved, we may understand how the Islamic scriptures are transmitted, the religious ritualsand duties practiced, the faith passed on, and the communities develop and survive. In the Asia-pacific region, due to various factors such as war, trade, and missionary work, migration of Han-speaking Muslims from Mainland China to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and even Central Asia led to the development of various Chinese Muslim communities outside China. Some of them even migrated again from Southeast Asia to Taiwan or the West.

Since the last two decades, more attentions have been paid to the study of Muslims in China and their religion by the Western and Chinese academicsin the field of Islamic studies. In spite of the abundant research results in Muslims in China, the migration of Han-speaking Muslims to Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Burma, and East Asia such as Taiwan and Hong Kong has been mostly neglected. Due to the lacking of deep theoretical analysis, detailed understanding of the historical issues involved, and adequate interpretation of religious thought, this area of research remained largely under-developed. This conference aims to promote interdisciplinary approaches to this research area in order to attain a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese Muslim diaspora.
